Lewis V. Tucker to Deborah O. Tucker, 9 February 1865
Marine U.S.A. Gen. Hospital N. Orleans La Feby 9th/65

            Dear Wife
I will try this morning to answer your letter of Jan the 24th which I recieved the 7th you may calculate that I was glad to get it although it made me feel very sad to read it & learn how much you are suffering for the necessaries of life and I here and unable to help you any at all and do not know how soon I shall get any money so that I can send you any. it makes my heart ache to think of the condition that you are in at home this winter with out money and no one to help you to get anything. Oh I long for the time to come that I can be with you again so if there is to be any suffering that I may take my share of it and not have you and the children to be obliged to suffer for you & me to. I shall not stay here a day longer than I am obliged to after my time is out the first boat that leaves here after that I shall I start for home on

I am just as anxious to be at home as you are to have me come for I think that I could do a little for you if I was there while here I am unable to do anything

The weather is quite cold here now as cold as it has been since I got back but it will not probably last a great while My health still keeps good and I hope that it will continue so. I have no news to write you for there is not much change here this winter and not any for the better Tell Lilly not to feel so bad about her kitty for I will get her a nice pet when I get home that she will like better than she does a kitten I would like to see the dear girl again it would do me so much good to see you all again

Tell Frank that I am glad that he is a good boy again and try to help you all that he can I do not forget him and as soon as I can will send him something nice

If I was only paid off I could send you a box that would help you very much for all of the things that I spoke of are at Algiers yet and have been accounted for as lost and I could go there and get of them all I want & send home I have 12 yard of very nice bleached muslin now to send you & another can of that coffee

I have a pressend for Mr Reynolds which I will send you in this letter it is another invitation to a negro weding which takes place here to night there is one nearly every week here now

Tell Frank that I will make him another ring and send him in a few days

I got the two Newark papers that you sent me I got them yesterday. To day I sent father two more Ledgers and also two New Orleans papers to Mr Cook

But I must close for this time
as Ever yours
