Camp Jackson Jan 17th 1862
 
Dear Sister I take the present oportunity of answering your kind letter of the 9th inst I was glad to hear that you was all well I have not bein very well for some six or eight dayes I have had the tootheache and face swolen very badley it is not [faded] better yet I hope it will [paper hole] well in a few dayes We are very comfortable fixed in our winter quarters whare all things bids fare for us to stay for the next 4 months there is no prospect of the enemy advancing this winter the roads are so bad that it will be imposable for them to transport their armey this winter the lates Northern intelagance is that they are in readiness to advance they have not gon in to winter / quarters yet as we can learn they must calculate on advancing by not going into winter quarters. I have no news worth wrighting you at this time
 
I am sorry to say to you that my box is lost for good you nead not try to get me any shirts or slips I have bought myself too pare of slips too woolen shirts and too lincey shirts and I allso hapened to get those too shirts that you sent me in the summer to Richmond how I came to get them when Mr Earnest was down hear as he went back through Richmond he looked in the express office [paper hole] my package and forwarded it to the Junction and it laid there till three or four dayes ago when Mr Litchfield our agent hapened to find it there has bein a new arangement since my box was lost there is onley too men from a Regiment that can get any thing from the express ofice there will not be so many things lost as hear to fore has bein you may send me another blanket 1 pr pants roundabought 1 of my vests I left / at home 1 pare of wolen gloves and some thing to eat some butter Mrs Hogg has some apple butter I want some pickle cucumbers you can pickel them and put them in a jar or crock Salie Hogg wrot to me that she had some fine apples to send me I would like to have some brandy if it can be got a cupple of galons will do I have not got any money to send home this time I had to pay a considerable price for what clothes I got I will be home when my time is ought if I live and they dont tie me some smart General has bein puting a bill [faded and creased] future to draft al the 12 months men as soon as their time is ought and not give them a chance to reanlist a gain I do not think it will pass the house of representative if you canot get my things ready to send by Mr Golihorn Charles Morell will be a come ing down before long and if not send it by Express I beleive that I have mentioned all that I want at this / time tell Miss Mollie Moor that I have not heard any thing from Mr Sheopard since I wrot to you before he is still alive yet or the phician that he is under would have reported him to the Captain tell Mr Cassells folks that they have Rufus has got his box give my respects to James Loyd and tell him that I am mutch obliged to him for the name and that I will dres him ought and ought when he gets large enough to know his namesake it is a mistake abought my boots being woren ought they are as good a pair of boots as I ever had tell Miss Molie that I will be shure to call on her next spring to wate on me give my respects Mr Browning and familey and all my friends give my love to Mother father brother and sisters tell Lewis that I will answer his letter in a short time nothing more from your brother Thos.
