Dear cousin
                with great pleasure I seat myself to answer your kind and welcome letter which I received last week and you dont know how glad I was to hear you had got through the fight safe and I do hope you will come off safe through all the hard battles that will be fought down there I am sorry to hear of so many poor fellows being killed Aunt Sallie is here to day she send her love to you and says to tell you she is very glad to hear the yan[ink blot] yankees did not get you for she knows your "Mary Jane" would cry about you O yes you thought I would never find out who your sweet heart was but I did when did you hear from her last Aunt Sallie says she was glad to hear Jerry come out safe but she says she is a fraid he is a coward for he is at home again 
 
I have not much news to writ we heard yesterday that our forces were whiped at Staunton and that Gen Johns was killed I was very sorry to heare of so many being killed Times are as hard as ever here some people are almost starving here or talk a great deal about it
 
Mother sends her love to you and wishes that you may live thrugh this war give my love to Tom if he has got back yet I have not heard from him yet Jennie Ann Fisk and all send their love to you and best wishes to you they are hurrying me so I must quit for this time please write soon to your Affectionate cousin
