Robert F. Twombly to Benjamin F. Twombly and Rosamond W. Twombly, 5 September 1862
Uptons Hill Sept the 5th 1862

Dear Father & Mother
and all the rest of the folks. I am alive and well after being in fights for 8 days since I wrote you. I should have wrote you before but they have stoped the mail although we can get letters from you well enough I cant send this unless I can get the Sutler to smugle it into Washington. we were in the fight of Saterday at Bull Run or Manassas. we have lost 5 out of our Co. killed & wounded Joseph Sanborn had one finger shot off in the fight of Saterday by the axcidental discharge of his own gun we have not herd from him since expect he is a prisioner

Old Jackson has driven us about 20 miles and whiped us the second time at Bulls Run it was a terible fight we lost a great many men.

we are now at Uptons Hill at Falls Church I am afraid that Jackson will get into Maryland if we dont have more men. our Lieut came here last night with 8 new recruits for this Co. write to amanda and tell her that I have got her letters and am alive and well and will write her as soon as I can

I have got letters from a number of Tamworth folks but cant answer them now would if I could. we had our knapsacks and every thing blankets and every thing burned up the other day at Centerville / to keep them from falling into the hands of the Rebles so when we get paid off we will have to get every thing new it will cost 4 or 5 dollars to get the things that we cant do without

I cant think of any thing more to write now the boys are all well as usual

Remember my love to all

Yours Truly
