we are still actively engaged in preparing our winter quarters and I think if we get to stay here there will be few better quarters in the army of Virginia or any other place There is some splendid land in Nicholas County in the vicinity of Summersville almost every house has plenty of home made molasses made out of [faded] of the [faded] and it it is as good as any molasses or syrp that ever I tasted apples are in great abundance and they were all of blair kind the Sesesh have taken every thing that is of any value burnt houses / may be seen at almost every point or or turn you may take the valley has been ruined for the time being the people are mostly all Sesesh but let on to be Union winter will soon set in but we have had a very beautiful fall so far we are about 160 miles from clarksburgh now and 12 miles from Camp Peak the head of navigation on the Kanawha river at the present time if we have a good rain some day soon the boats can run past this about 12 miles the river is rising at the present time and the boats can run up in a day or two I am still in great anxiety to hear from you I wish you would send me the latest papers at every chance you get I have not seen a late paper since I left Clarksburgh
