James Wilson
James Wilson was born around 1843 in Ohio to John and Susanna Wilson. His father was a farmer who owned $7,000 of real estate by 1850. He grew up and attended school in Steubenville, Ohio. His mother died around 1850, and his father died the following year. After his parents' death, he was raised by his uncle Nathaniel Wilson and his aunt Nancy Wilson.

He enlisted in the Union army on August 11, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company G of the 30th Ohio Infantry. In September 1862, he assured his family that “I have never regreted volunteering but I think I done right I owed it as a duty to my country.” He added that “my home is of no use to me if the union arms do not triumph.” He died of disease in Gallipolis on February 18, 1863.
