Friend John
I have your letter dated Fort St Philip Miss River May 8th in which you question somewhat the existence of your friends in this vicinity, more especially your humble servant. You ask the following questions, "have you heard from that money? why don't you write me! are you all dead &c." Now my good friend I will endeavor to explain—I have recd from you six letters in all dated March 9.15.31. April 7.17. and May 8., have personally written twice that number to you, with what I have forwarded for others by mail or otherwise will probably number some twenty five, so, should you ever receive, you will have your "hearts content" The money has all arrived safe, / 50.$ in your name, and 33.$ for Mrs Moulton, by hands of Lieut Woods of Acton. The last of April I recd from Mr Stickney of Lowell the 355.$, anticipated, also the amount due Mr Hall from Ed. (please say this to him) every thing is "all right" this side of Masons & Dixons line so far. I sent by Adams Express Co the 3rd day of April, a box, directed to you "Co B. Mass. 26th Regt. Col E. F. Jones Ship Island", containing opera glass, letters, papers, shirts for Wm Priest &c, why you have not recd it, I am unable to say, it is of too much value to be lost. you better enquire of the resident Express Agt. the Express is paid 75 cts, for which I have a recpt. very strange every thing directed North is recd in due season, but that forwarded to you is a long time on the way if ever it reaches its destination. You say you would like 20 yds netting if it could reach / you by July 1st. I think it doubtful will enquire of the Express before I close. This letter will go via N.Y. mail steamer June 5th. If I can be assured that a package will reach you, shall most certainly comply with your request. Should send you papers oftener, but I understand that the mails have such quantities that part are left out. Have paid Fass 15$ and 3.75, sent your Mother 8.$ which she has acknowledged, have about 1.50 in my hands. the principle is doing "A. No. 1."
The Express Co say that if I will leave a package at office in Boston the first of next week that it will probably reach you about the 20th June, think now that I shall send, am not certain. be on the lookout, please acknowledge everything sent you. will write with package all well, remember us to all
yours as ever
