Nathan R. Thayer
Nathan R. Thayer was born on November 25, 1821, in Hollis, New Hampshire, to Nathan and Hannah Thayer. He married Emily Wood on June 23, 1846, and they had at least two children: Ida, born around 1855; and Jennie, born around 1857. They lived in Groton, Massachusetts, and he worked as a custom house clerk. By 1870, he owned $3,500 of real estate. In 1873, “after nineteen years’ faithful service,” he received an appointment as deputy custom house collector. A local writer described him as a “faithful and well-tried public official.” He died of heart disease in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 26, 1874.
