James H. Pollard to Loraine Pollard, undated
...than the mere reproof of a minister in a smiling w[faded]

If I were you Lorane I would not think of going back to Herkimer County but either stop some where near our folks or go out and live with Sister Mary a while And then there is Sister Martha whom I recd a letter from today & she says that she would be very happy to have you "come and stay as long as you could feel contented" She says that she would like to become more acquainted with you and says that you "had too much anxiety on your mind the last time she saw you" Make up your mind to enjoy yourself if you dont make a cent

I am glad to see such an interest felt for my Comrad and tent mate for he is a good hearted fellow and I believe would make a kind companion for Libbie if time should so destine it to be a fact At any rate the notion seems to be very agreeable on his part and confidence is all that seems to be lacking in opening an independent communication to her by mail You wished his pedigree He has neither Father or Mother living His Mother died when he was eleven years old and his Father died last Oct. His Father was a Doct by profession and followed it to near the time of his death He commenced taking care of himself when about 14 years of age & has since not only supported himself but the last two years had provided for a disabled brother. As for his looks he has written home for a photograph and as soon as it can be got he will forward it to either you or Libbie and you can then satisfy yourselves He is a resident of NY City and has nary sweet heart that he is under the least obligation to Tell Libbie that the coast is clear and nothing to fear Lorane [torn away]
