To John & Jessie
My Dear Children
It is a long while since you have written to me. And your Father was very glad in receiving your little letters. I am happy to tell you that since you wrote last you have improved wonderfully. You both write much better than I expected, and bid fair, in time to make finished scholars. I knew of your receiving prizes at the Annual Exhibition last summer and was very proud of you both Continue to improve as you have done. Obey your Mother implicitly in all things, for she more than any one else knows what is best for you. I cannot tell you / now when I shall be at home but may possibly in a month or so. By taking your maps and looking in the South Eastern part of the State of Maryland, you will find a place called Point Lookout. A few years ago there was nothing but a light house, and a few dwellings on the point. Now it is crowded with mechanics, soldiers, sailors and Rebel prisoners, many thousands of whom are crowded together in a large field enclosed by a fence 12 feet high. On the top of this fence are placed many soldiers with loaded muskets, and if any of the Rebels try to escape the soldiers shoot them down and kill them. I am now building houses to shelter these men from the cold winter that is coming on I shall write no more to night Kiss your mother for me. Be good to your Grand Mother and your Father and every one will love you
Good bye darlings, from your Father Edwin R. Pierce
