Charles Richard Burt was born on March 4, 1845, in Hartford, Connecticut, to Richard and Maria Burt. His father was an insurance agent who owned $20,000 of real estate and $10,000 of personal property by 1870. He grew up in Hartford, and he attended school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1865, he became a clerk at the Connecticut Fire Insurance Company. He was promoted to assistant secretary in December 1867 and then to secretary in January 1873. He married Sophia Matilda Sill around 1872, and the couple had no children. He served as a Sunday school superintendent and a church deacon. According to a local writer, he “held a high place among the local insurance men.” He died in Hartford on November 20, 1907.
