James B. Carpenter
James B. Carpenter was born on July 9, 1819, in Johnstown, New York. He attended school in Gouverneur, New York, and he graduated from Castleton Medical College in 1847. He married Roxaline Flower around 1848, and their daughter Frances was born around 1855. He worked as a physician in Philadelphia, New York. They moved to Theresa, New York, in the 1850s, and by 1860, the family owned $1,700 of real estate and $700 of personal property.
 
In August 1862, he received a commission as an assistant surgeon in the 35th New York Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Antietam and the Battle of Fredericksburg. He resigned on January 13, 1863.
 
The family moved to Gouverneur around 1867, and by 1870, they owned $2,500 of real estate and $3,000 of personal property. His wife died around 1887. In the 1890s, a local writer described him as “one of Gouverneur’s wealthiest and most respected citizens.” His health deteriorated in the mid-1890s, and he committed suicide in Gouverneur on October 28, 1895.
