Dear Sir
I have just received a circular sent me by Natt Holman of Lagrange Texas wanting information as to what was done with our gallant Colonel Joseph Phillips body who was killed in leading his command in a knight attact on Fort Butler on June 28 63 as I am the only Capt of the Regment living so far as I no it will be a dificult matter to give you the information you want I was not in the engagement on fort Butler I was orderd by the Colonel / to Fort Deversa on Red River and did not join the Regment untill 5 day after the fight after I joined the Regment on the 3 of July then being in command of the Regment I sent a flag of truce to Fort Butler to find out what had been done with our killed and wounded as they all fell in to the enemys hands the commander of the Fort sent me a note that our dead had been burried and wounded well cared for So you can see it will be a hard matter to find out what particular point he was burried at the present time I dont know of none of the Regment living that was in that / ingagement you might find out from the Commander of Fort Butler if he is living but I cant tell you his name at this time but may find it in some of my army papers
