Sidney B. DeKay to Annie C. Thomas, 12 August 1864
Head Quarters
Department of Virginia & North Carolina,
In the Field, August 12th 1864.

Dear Madam
It gives me great pleasure to be able to say that I was half aware that I should not address you as Miss Thomas, but as there was an uncertainty, did so as in duty bound.

The Rebel authorities demand a dime in silver or one of their ten-cent postage stamps for each letter of the usual weight. Allow me, therefore, as silver dimes are not plentiful, to send you a few of the stamps

With profound compliments to Miss Thomas

I am with great respect
Your obedient servant
Sidney B. De Kay
Lt & A.D.C.
