Walter S. Burges to Edwin Metcalf, 12 September 1861
Providence
Sept 12/61
Major Metcalf—
May I not ask you in behalf of a poor woman who is crazy about her son in Co. H. of your Regiment to ascertain the facts & do what you can for her relief. His name is Michael Nelligan, 19 years of age & was persuaded by Sinnot as she says to go as "his Clerk" in the 3d Regiment.
She & her friends will cheerfully pay back the bounty & all the expense that the Govt has been put to on ac/ of his enlistment.
I have no doubt that she will visit your camp, after waiting a proper time for your reply—as she repudiates the contract of enlistment & is going to law / if compelled to do so. I hope you can let up on him, if possible. Remember the 2 Seine boys & do as well as you can. You have 2 brothers in Greenwich Jail which I hope to let off next week and one in Prov Jail which I hope to do the same by the week after—
Please inform me if the 2 Seine boys are actually in the regiment
Truly yours
N S Burges
