William E. (?) to Edwin Metcalf, 13 September 1861
Snowden/R I/
            Sept 13—1861—

To
Major Edwin Metcalf
            8th Regt R.I.V.

Dear Sir—Since your Regt. left Camp Ames for your present orders here—I have received a commission as Capt. from Gen. Sprague. I am ready to go to [?]. I will thank you to write me your view as to the probability of my being called upon and if so when. I would like to have the written statement.
I was ordered by Brig. Genl Hollis to report myself at / the Adjutant General's Office and have done so—but as yet have received no orders—

I have also had a conversation with General [?] who has thus far given me no orders. Gen. Sprague is not here & I am at a loss what to do:—As you can readily conceive my mind is unsettled I either wish to settle down in my profession or "gird on my arms and go into the war" I should be pleased to hear from you

Respectfully
Wm E S[?]
