Walter S. Burges to Edwin Metcalf, 19 September 1861
Prov R.I. Sep 19/61

Major Metcalf

My Dear Sir;
                        Your favor was duly recd. Thanks for your promptness. The Bishop joins with a host of other Irish Catholics to get the Nelligan back again. His mother is very sick & broken down in consequence of the boy. It was a cruel deception on the part of his recruiting officer. the proof is full that he was and is in his 20th year.

            Look here, Ned, by——, that boy ought to be sent home by the first man that comes. You cant hold him by his contract and I have made his place good threefold, yes five fold, Myself last night 3 went on with Tisdale that I might have kept back / Let Nelligan return with Tisdale why not? Let technical proof of age be 90 to 100 days. You know I would not ask it, if I did not believe the statements I have made & that he will be a source of bother to you as long as you hold on to him.

            Hope you find your position agreeable—everything goes on here as usual. am now going over to the funeral of Gen Anthony. 4th Regt will be off in 3 or 4 days I am told—

Truly yours
