William J. King to Edwin Metcalf, 5 October 1861
Prov. Oct. 5 1861.

Maj. Metcalf,

Dear Sir,
I have directed Revd O Eastman, New York, to send you 600 copies "Cromwell Soldiers Bible"—a small, but very interesting book. May I call your attention especially to the preface, as a soldier, a fact stated there will interest you.

Your kind, prompt, & beautifully written letter, was very gratifying to a few friends to whom it was shown. Few have the talent to say so much, & say it so well, in so few words. May the hand that wrote & the mind that dictated / that beautiful note be long spared to our beloved Country!

I have often thought of our 3d Reg & have said that the Americans, who enlisted with so large a number of foreigners, deserve great praise for their patriotism and self denial. And, I trust, you, & others of our own Nation, will not be forgotten. If prayers will shield you, then are you safe.

You may hear from us again—

Very truly
W J King, fr Sup
& a true friend
