Christopher Blanding to Edwin Metcalf, 18 November 1861
Providence Nov 18 1861

Old kind and true Friend
I have only a few moments to give to this note had I have known that Doct Peckham was to leave here to night a little earlier, I would have given something of interest to you, and will do so soon.

I am engaged in organizing the 5 Regt which occupies every moment of my time as you must know. my mornings are given to office matters during which hours I am about as busy as a certain old Gentleman in a gale of wind. the afternoon is passed in camp about eight miles from here returning in the evening with the mercury a shade or two lower than it probably is with you.

Major your kind favor from Old Point was very acceptable to me, and I trust you will continue there I am as you know very much interested in all that pertains to the 3d therefore please give me the details as early and as often as possible. I have written to Col Brown / to Capt Gould and Lt Blanding. I wrote before the Regt left Old Point. Please remember me to all the officers to Col Brown, Lt Col Bucklin, to my young friend the Adjt, to our busy stiring indefatigueable Qr Master, tell him that I urged him strong to the Gov for a Captaincy in one of the Batterys but he said he was to useful where he is and I thought so to. make a slight nod of recognition to Doct Stickney for me accompanied with a pressure of the palm and to all others out of our mess say what you please for me, so that it be cordial.

Major would that I were with you sharing your joys over your first victory, and with you to bear my part of what ever may betide you, let it be good or ill. And may the great I Am have you in His holy keeping finally returning you all to your homes with the honest convictions of having done your duty.

Yours sincerely
C Blanding
