Charles H. Waterhouse to Edwin Metcalf, 13 January 1862
North Attleboro' Mass. Jan 13. 1862
Major
My brother Eben W Waterhouse has written me, stating that the Third Reg't is to be increased by the addition of two companies, and asking me if I would try and get him an appointment of Lieut. He is now Sergeant in Company A, of your Reg't. He served with the Rhode Island First, and was in the battle of Bull Run, and as far as I can learn performed well his part on that occasion. Col Brown (now of the Third) was his Captain at that time. I have taken the liberty to write to you as I knew of no more proper person, for a good word from the Officers of the Reg't will do more than from any one else.
At the time your Reg't was in Camp Ames he was detailed to assist Quarter Master Martin in his department. I think he is qualified for the place asked for, but of that of course you are the best judge. I am certain that / reposed in him will not be misplaced. If you should see fit to recommend him for the a Lieutenantcy you would confer a great favor, not only on him but on all the family. If convenient, should be pleased to hear from you.
Very respectfully yours
Charles H Waterhouse
