Clement Webster to Edwin Metcalf, 17 March 186X
Office of the Post.
Providence, March 17.

Dear Metcalf:

An old friend and neighbor of mine, Lieut. A. G. Evans, leaves to-day to join your regiment; and as he is too modest to show his own good qualities at a glance, I take the liberty of recommending him to your kindly notice. He is a brave soldier; served ten months in India and two years in the Crimea, (with the English) and in Capt. Van Slyck's Company at Bull Run. He is however a native of R.I., and will honor his State whenever there is work to be done, however little he may shine when display only is wanted. The more you / see him, the better you will like him, for he is frank, honest, and as fixed as the North Star. The Governor likes him

I hear excellent reports of yourself, and am pleased—may I not say a little disappointed—to find you so easily putting on the soldier. I heard a few days ago that you would return on a visit very soon, but have not much expected to see for some weeks or perhaps months. I think the rebellion will be far enough wiped out to have the Southern ports opened before the end of June.

Yours in haste
C. Webster

Major E. Metcalf.
