Nathaniel W. Brown to Edwin Metcalf, 14 January 1862
Head Quarters Hilton Head
Jan 14th 1862

Dear Major
I am not in the mood to write letters tho I have received yours with a great deal of satisfaction and acknowledge my obligation to write. One day you know is like another here and all days alike and as they were before you must see they have been since. The health of the men remains at about the same [?] in Co's I. & M. I feel very anxious about yourself & your command not that I have any doubt but what you & they will perform well any part they have to perform but on account of your exposure to the sun rain & night air without your usual and regular rations & camp equipage.

The Head grows more [?] intolerable to me. the only thing that has transpired to break the dull monotony was the sending of 30 prisoners [?] yesterday to [?] to destroy the White House opposite, from which they had been firing on our pickets on Pinckney Island—and collecting there an unusual number of boats. the thing was successful the range was easily obtained and [faded] / [faded] went over and burnt the house & destroyed the boats.

Major be assured you have my best wishes for your success. you have ever been ready to [?] my efforts to drill & discipline the men have been proper and that I have undertaken myself & tried to impress it upon. thus had we come out here on a stern duty and not for a mere holiday. and if the battalion does well to the end as I have no doubt it will I shall claim some little of the credit for having prepared the men.

I do not hear from any other than Rainey that there is any chance for Bucklin any where else. Bailey is overstaying his time. Gould went home yesterday without my knowledge

Ever Yours
