New York July 21st /62.
Dear Major,
You will be I have no doubt surprised not to see me by this steamer. It was my intention to have left by her, but since I arrived in New York I have been under the care of my family surgeon and he said it was not proper for me to go so far South this month, and the Medical director of this city has ordered me to report to Camp Wool at Annapolis I leave to night what he will do with me I do not know but as there is a school of Instruction there I suppose I shall have to drill recruits not a very pleasant duty. I shall join my company as soon as I can I tried hard to get away to day but it was impossible. There is no news to write here I have been to Providence and was sick most of the time [faded] I did not see [faded] returned home [faded] written [faded] I have been expecting him home every day I wish you to except the belt which will be handed you by Capt Gould. Please excuse the maner in which this letter is written I am in the Office at the Canal St Dock. sadly this is the best I can find to do with I would like to hear from you if you send to Jersey City my Father will forward it to me. Kind respects to all the Officers.
