Lemuel H. A. Salisbury to Edwin Metcalf, 2 August 1862
Providence Aug. 2, 1862.
My Dear Friend,
I have been requested by the friends of George Adams a private in Co I. 3d Regt. R.I.V. who is said to be very sick to write you a line in his behalf. He is related by marriage to my brother John, and it is from my brother's family that I have learned all that I know of his case. I would request of you, as a favor to me, to examine into his case, and do for him whatever you properly can. His family believe, probably from his letters, that he is some better if he recovers where he is and they desire that he may have a furlough to return / home until he is restored to health. My object is to ask your attention to his condition as something may perhaps be done for his relief, if the desire for a furlough cannot be gratified.
I have called him a private because no office was named in connection with his name.
I have read with the greatest pleasure the public commendation of your conduct & skill in the late engagement. I had no doubt how you would meet dangers and only hope you will come out of them [faded]
We are having much warm weather; with rain enough about here, and the crops promise to be abundant.
Yours most truly
Lem Salisbury
