Horatio Rogers Jr. to Edwin Metcalf, 5 September 1862
Hilton Head S.C
Sept 5th 1862

Dear Col.
I forgot to ask you in my last a few days since to please to call at father's & bring on a few things for me if you please will. You would very much oblige me also by finding out minutely just how dear father is & all about him as I am more anxious than you can imagine, tied up out here as I am & he so sick for money. I am sorry to trouble you Sir, but if you would take that trouble for me it would take a load from my mind; for a conversation by word of mouth even though through a third person is much more satisfactory / than by the instrumentality of pen & ink. We are anxiously looking for your arrival here. Since my last note Maj. Blanding & Capt Tourtellott have resigned, both on account of ill health & both go north by this Steamer, as does also Genl Hunter who goes on leave. Genl Brennan is in command.

The story here is that Capt Gould is very desirous of getting Blandings place & has obtained a letter of recommendation from Col Barton & the officers of the 40th New York who are stationed at Pulaski with him. If true that is a course that would have more effect in his favor for a Majorship of the New York Regt than in a Rhode Island Regt unless indeed these New York officers imagine that their position is so / exalted as to cause their good opinion to bear down everything. It is quite cool here now comparatively & I hope it is permanently so.

Trusting to see you soon
I remain
Yours most respectfully
H Rogers Jun.
