Nathaniel W. Brown to Edwin Metcalf, 11 September 1862
New York Sept 11th 62

Dear Major,
I still remain in NY as you will see by the date hereof. the word now is that the ship sails tomorrow morning as we are to be embarked at 8 oclock, but I shall not be surprised if it was nearly night before we got away. I shall never come home, to return again, that you may believe. I've suffered nothing but annoyance since 25 August when I first began writing about transportation.

I was very much surprised to see Blanding. no doubt you have seen him and he has told you all he has told me. every bodys resignation is accepted but mine and as I feel now I shall try mine on again before a good while.

In all candor and you may cast it as you please I do not like the idea of not finding you at Hilton Head at my return. why not accept a reappointment and come again? You can get along with a certain gentleman (?) while I am there, at any rate perhaps he will not stay a great while, then the road to the Colonelcy will be wide open to you.

I enclose a letter from Rogers. Day is most assuredly installed to be the next Major & thro' you I must strongly recommend him and if you do not take / my advice and there is another vacancy to fill ought Gould to have it? Are there not other Captains, Shaw Bailey who are more straight forward in their way of obtaining it. Then for the vacant Captaincys.

I recommend Brayton & Colwell—and Foy will make as good a captain as Briggs and he knows how to get a company in order and to keep it so. You must admit that Company I improved much faster under him than under Eldridge

Should there be four Captains to appoint, I shall not know who to recommend for the other unless it be Gleason!! that stripe in the regiment ought to be represented, dont you think so?

Sorry to hear that Eddy is so ill.

Please write.

Yours truly
NWB

Perhaps Strahan can get the officers of the 47th or some other regiment to recommend him for Major.

Old Martin might not be a bad man even tho' he has but one leg.
