H. Barstow to Edwin Metcalf, 2 November 1862
Washington D.C.
Nov. 2/62

Col. E. Metcalf

My dear Sir
I passed the morning of to day, from early dawn to high noon among your pickets, and thus missed an opportunity of seeing you before I left camp. I beg liberty to express my thanks for your polite attentions; and also of the satisfaction I have had in witnessing not alone the soldierly bearing, but the high morale of your command. It seemed to me that the temper and spirit of the Regt was admirable.

The universal expression [torn]
for, and confidence in [torn]
Regimental and Com[torn]
officers, which I heard [torn]
was remarkable.

I shall follow you in your campaign with a tender interest, and with an assured confidence that you will honor both yourselves and your Country, in whatever post you are called to fill or part you are called to bear in this great struggle.

            I am dear Sir

Yours truly
H. Barstow.
