Henry Smith Olney
Henry Smith Olney was born on January 27, 1831, in Dighton, Massachusetts, to Amos and Elizabeth Olney. His father was an accountant. He lived in Plainfield, Connecticut, until the 1850s, when he moved to Scituate, Rhode Island. He married Harriet Hendrick on October 19, 1854, and they had at least two children: Sarah, born around 1855; and Hendrick, born around 1858.

In April 1862, he received a commission as a 1st lieutenant in Battery G of the 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery. Army officials transferred him to the 11th Rhode Island Infantry in October 1862. The regiment helped defend Washington, D.C., and he mustered out on July 13, 1863.

He settled in Providence, Rhode Island, after leaving the army, and he worked as a “crockery dealer’s clerk.” His wife died on March 19, 1887. He applied for a federal pension in July 1900 and eventually received one. He died on September 7, 1907.
