Edwin J. Pond to Edwin Metcalf, 3 November 1862
Minors Hill
Virginia Nov 3d/62
Colonel Metcalf,
Most worthy Sir,
Emboldened by the kind words of sympathy expressed by you a few evenings since, when I applied to you for a furlough, that I might return home to attend the funeral of my only child, I take the liberty of asking another favor of you, namely if you would in your kindness assist me to obtain the situation as one of those to assist in writing according to the orders read Saturday evening. If you thought me competent to fill the situation / and would be so kind as to recommend me, I should be under the greatest of obligations to you. My reasons for wishing this situation is that since I have been in camp my lungs have troubled me some, so that at times it troubles me to perform my part in the band, as I enlisted as a fifer. My occupation and profession has been that of teaching music, having been engaged in that capacity in the City of Providence for the last five years. hoping that these few lines will not offend, I remain your most
humble and obt. Servt.
Edwin. J. Pond.
Co. A. 11th R.I.V.
P.S. Please excuse all imperfections in this note as my accommodations, and facilities for writing are very poor indeed
Very Respectfully E.J.P.
