Dear Col.
I have just forwarded a commission to Fleener, for a 2nd Ltcy in the 12th Regt.
His appointment came quite unsuspected [faded]

possibility of my visiting Hilton Head, this winter.
Indeed I found it was impossible to have. My proctc. has about returned, so that I am fully occupied.
You will gather from the papers the military and political condition of the country, they look anything but promising.
I [faded] supposed a [faded] Murfreesboro. The report this morning looks very much like it [faded]
I was sure however it would be so, knowing as I did the feeling of the Officers & men towards you. I am sorry and some what surprised that that department is to remain idle. You may yet [faded] work. It is surmised of by some, that Genl Butler may have com [faded] Department [faded] all of our [faded] would be in a fit condition they will depart for Charleston.
You as a fighting man would hail with joy anything that promised active service.
The return of Turner will [faded] / to tell you any thing of Providence matters. I have not seen your brother the Capt. yet or Lt Col Buckle.
I called on Mrs. Col Metcalf last evening with my daughter Rosa.
I think from what she said your heart will soon be glad with her presence. Remember me in kindness to [faded] and your other Officers [faded] I can render you any time will afford me pleasure. I would be glad to hear from you when you find time from your round of duties
