William P. Martin to Edwin Metcalf, 28 June 1863
Groton Connecticut
June 28th 1863.

Dear Sir.
I have just returned from Key West. The place was so excessively hot, and the twitching of my leg so constant and painful that I was unable to get any sleep. I find there are worse places than even Hilton Head. I dont know when I shall go on duty. I have reported by letter to the Comdg Genl.

I heard several weeks since from Hanford that James was discharged, but as we received a letter from himself subsequently, dated in General Hospital, there was evidently some mistake.

Will you be good enough to let me know if anything has happened to him, and whether he is likely to get his discharge. I suppose you have heard that our Gen. Sherman lost a leg at Port Hudson.

Mrs Martin joins me in best wishes to yourself and all our acquaintances. God bless the old [torn]

Very truly Yours
Wm P. Martin
