Mary T. Ames to Eliza Metcalf, 16 July 186X
Dear Mrs Metcalf
I am very much obliged to you for the carte de visite of Col Metcalf. Allow me to say that though a good likeness it is not half as handsome as he is. It would be difficult for any artist to catch the expression of his remarkable eye. Before going to Saratoga Mr Ames desired me to thank you for the likeness of your / father, which he is very much pleased to own. I did not know how to address you at Newport or I should have acknowledged sooner the receipt of your note containing the photographs, & the kind allusion to my son. When you write will you present my best respects & regards to your gallant husband, whose bravery & high qualities of mind & heart greatly endear / him to hosts of officers & soldiers under his command. With many thanks
I remain
Very truly
Yours
Mary T. Ames
