Mary Throop Ames (maiden name: Dorr) was born on October 16, 1811, in Providence, Rhode Island, to Sullivan and Lydia Dorr. Her father was a prominent manufacturer, and her brother Thomas Dorr was a politician and reformer who led Dorr’s Rebellion. She married Samuel Ames around 1838, and they had at least five children: Sullivan, born around 1841; William, born around 1842; Edward, born around 1846; Samuel, born around 1849; and Mary, born around 1852. They lived in Providence, and her husband worked as a lawyer. In 1856, her husband became chief justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court. He died on December 20, 1865, and she died of heart disease in Providence on February 14, 1869.
