William Ames to Edwin Metcalf, 19 July 1863
Headquarters U.S. Forces,
On The Savannah River,
Fort Pulaski, Ga., July 19th, 1863.
Dear Col
I am much obliged to you for your kindness in sending my mail to Lawton. I send over a boat to-morrow morning for the purpose of sending three (3) deserters from ft Pulaski to Hilton Head. These men came down from Savannah to-day in a skiff and arrived at the fort about [faded]. I questioned them but could not get anything of importance from them as they said that [faded]
all to have a good dose of cold lead, for their informal proceedings in that city.
I would be much obliged to you if you would allow the Orderly to buy me one or two New South's every Saturday, and send them to me. I will send you the money for them. No news to send you from this desolate place. We depend entirely upon your end of the line for all news
Remember me to all the officers of the regiment
Yours
Wm Ames
