William Ames to Edwin Metcalf, 24 July 1863
Headquarters U.S. Forces,
On The Savannah River,
Fort Pulaski, Ga., July 24th, 1863.

Dear Col
I commence to think that the rebels have effected a crossing at some point on the entrenchments, and carried you all off. I have not been able to get any news from the Head or any where else for the past week

I am anxious to hear some news [faded] Companies [faded] as the [faded] acc[faded] / had been pretty severely handled, if one can rely on their own statements.

I am surrounded by a 48th atmosphere and hear of nothing else from morning until night. My command gets on well and I have not as yet had any trouble at all.

I would be much obliged to you if when convenient you would send me General Orders No 16 from Head Quarters US Forces [faded] Feb 1st 1863 [faded] the tariff of prices adjusted by the Council of Administration at that Post. I think that the Sutler is charging [faded] high price [faded] / I intend to have the Post Council of Administration adopt your tariff.

I have got the run of the place now, and know where everything is and where it ought to be. I have no news to send you, but expect lots from you

Regards to all
Yours
Wm Ames
Major [faded]
