William Ames to Edwin Metcalf, 31 July 1863
Fort Pulaski Ga
July 31st 1863

Dear Col
I cannot tell you how pained I was to hear of your sad bereavement and the great affliction that you have been called upon to bear at this time. the ways of the Almighty are sometimes hard to bear but in His great mercy and goodness can we alone obtain comfort and consolation in [faded] trial Your own strong sense of our duty of resignation to a higher power over which we have no control must [faded] you in this your day of most bitter trial.

And may you look forward for consolation to that higher and happier world in which we shall go to those who cannot come [faded] to all for me.
