Charles R. Brayton to Edwin Metcalf, 16 August 1864
Office Chief of Artillery,
Department of the South,
Hilton Head, S.C., August 16th, 1864.
My Dear Colonel,
Yours of the 5th is just received by the "Arago" and I hasten to reply. I enclose Blank duly signed but slightly torn as you will see by accident.
Strahan, Turner, Curtis and McGinty come home by the Arago with Cos "A", "E" and "I". I shall make a new Co of the remaining members and give it to Hamner.
I stand no sight for the 2d as the Gov is not favorable to me as I have opposed the only two appointments made against [torn] wishes and beaten him.
I shall be mustered out Oct 5th. K and L have just gone to Morris Island.
Truly yours
C R Brayton.
Col 3d R.I. Artillery
