Dear Colonel,
Yours of Feb 22d is just received by the "Arago" and I hasten to reply. I thank you kindly for the interest you have taken in securing my promotion. I shall of course feel uneasy until I receive the Commission. Maj Ames comes home with 103 Veterans, also Capt Greene, Lieuts Thompson, Bible and E W Waterhouse. Bailey I fear will block re-enlisting at Pulaski by his blunders.

I should go in for the Colonelcy of the 14th, why not. you can pass the examination, forget the past and begin anew, it is not too late. I have sent a recommendation to the Gov emanating from Terry and endorsed by [faded] and Gillmore so the Gov can have no excuse on that score. I enclose a Visite. I shall always be glad to hear of your success and to hear often from you. In haste,

Truly your friend,
[faded, torn]
