Charles R. Brayton to Edwin Metcalf, 19 September 186X
Fort Welles, S.C.
Sept 19th, 186[1]
Major,
Colonel Brown arrived by the "Arago" last Monday and was enthusiastically cheered by the Regiment and greeted handsomely by the Officers and men. But to the point. I called on him last night in regard to my future position in the Regiment and he told me "that I could say to my friends at home that he had recommended me for a Captaincy" and I address you as one of my friends to aid me in securing the Captaincy of Co C. Recommendations for other Lieuts will probably reach the Governor by this mail from the Colonel also one for Capt Day as a Major. now what I desire is that if I am appointed it may state that it is to fill the vacancy occasioned by the promotion of Capt Day and if possible that the commission also should designate Light Co C so that there / can be no monkey-work about the Co C desire by assigning me to some other Co which I do not want. Things are so uncertain that I want a sure thing as far as possible should the commission reach me. The Colonel is bitter about the Governor and yourself too much so for his own good, for he tells it to Ellis who gets tight and lets it out. I am at present Ordnance Officer of the Post and like it very much and shall hold the position unless I can get Co C.
Respectfully
your ob'd't servant,
CR Brayton
1st Lieut 3d R.I.A.
