Charles T. Northup to Edwin Metcalf, 14 May 1886
Northup, C.T.
Centreville R.I. May 14, 1886.

My Dear Colonel
Can't there be something done to bring about the election of new sheriffs in, at least Providence, Kent and Washington Counties? It does seem to me that the friends of a reasonable enforcement of prohibition, can accomplish that result if they will make a vigorous effort to do so from now til the meeting of the Grand committee at Newport.

I understand that there is a good prospect of beating Collingwood in our county caucus, cannot Holden be superseded in your county in the same way?

The refusal of Holden to appoint Johnson at your request should hurt him in his canvass for reelection.

I have always had a good opinion of A.C. Johnsons ability and faithfulness as an officer in the discharge of his duty as he understood it. Hoping to meet you at the session of the [?] Monday—

I am faithfully yours
C. T. Northup /

Hon. Edwin Metcalf.

Did not sheriff Holden, in a little controversy with Mayor Doyl, somewhere about 1876- or 7- refuse to execute the liquor laws, saying in a letter, "I will not involve my bondsmen etc.? Please find the date of that letter if you can for me.

J. C. Collins told me the other day that he remembered it, that Holden spoke to him about it at the time.

It seems to me that steps should be taken, at once, to firm a party upon the basis of the enforcement of the laws, that we may have an efficient aid in Gov Wetmore in that direction.

Excuse want of letter
writing materials, if not
     "    & logic, also—let
us take the offensive
from July 1, to the close
of the war—
