Susan Austin Anthony was born on March 16, 1839, in Campbell County, Virginia, to Charles Anthony and Martha Haden. Her father was a planter who owned $71,000 of real estate and $60,000 of personal property, including nearly 100 enslaved laborers. She grew up in Campbell County before enrolling at Hollins Institute in Roanoke, Virginia. She married attorney Victor Brandon around 1863, and their daughter Morgianna was born around 1865. The family lived in Campbell County, and her husband died there in April 1866. After Victor’s death, she returned to her father’s household near Lynchburg, Virginia, and she remained there until at least 1880. She died in Campbell County on January 29, 1886.
