Jacob Parker Gould
Jacob Parker Gould was born on May 15, 1822, in Stoneham, Massachusetts, to Jacob and Phebe Gould. His father was a farmer who owned $2,500 of real estate in 1850. Gould grew up and attended school in Stoneham. He taught school for at least a year, and by 1855, he was working as a civil engineer. On July 16, 1861, he received a commission as a major in the 13th Massachusetts Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, and the Battle of Gettysburg. On April 25, 1864, he was promoted to colonel of the 59th Massachusetts Infantry. He was severely wounded on July 30, 1864, during the Siege of Petersburg, and doctors amputated his leg. He died in Somerville, Massachusetts, on August 21, 1864.
