Dear Mother
Yours and Mats letter come to hand yesterday I was glad to hear from you it had been a long time since I had heard from you I am well and in good spirits dont let any one trouble you with their talk about Kansas I am not haveing half as hard times as you folks think I am Why Ma there / pleanty of people in this country and pleanty to eat I have seen a great deal harder times when I was in the lumber woods of Pensylvania the hardest I see of this is keeping batch and doing our own cooking but we are getting along good to what we did at first I tell you that our cook which is my friend Nick can just bake a loaf of bread that beats them all and corn bread that would tempt the best cook in the world I think that if Mrs Hyd (I believe that she is the sick one) would come to Kansas it would be a great benefit to her health as it is the healthiest places that I ever was in I never felt better in my life of course we have to work hard but we came here with that / intention but I have had to always had to do that and never found any fawlt and am wiling to yet now dont trouble let it trouble you I am not much farther of only about a two days ride we can get to a small town in about two hours ride with our team but to the Rail Road it takes two days to make the trip. you had better send that money to Mary direct it Mrs Winfield Divine as Uncle Dicks folks sometimes gets her letters for them Mary she will send it to me when I want it I wish that what Sewell owes me was due as I need money now as bad as I ever will I guess if I can get through untill we can get the first crop then I will be all right you see that there is no money coming in / summer but all going out but I think that we will fetch it through tell Uncle John to take out that ten dollars and interest tell George that if that script will fetch anything let it go as the money will pay me better here than it will in script and now is the time that I need it if ever I am glad that Seward is improving his place tell him that I would like to have him write to me and I will  answer it promptly I think that if could come west and lay out his money it would pay him better What does he work at and what does he intend to do I cant see hardly what there is for him to do there /
