Joseph M. Bushfield
Joseph M. Bushfield was born around 1835 in Pennsylvania to Samuel and Lydia Bushfield. His father was a merchant. Bushfield grew up and attended school in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Bushfield moved to Pease, Ohio, sometime in the 1850s. By 1860, he was working as a druggist, and he owned $2,000 of personal property. He enlisted in the Union army on July 21, 1861, and mustered in as a sergeant in Company H of the 2nd West Virginia Infantry. He was transferred to the 5th West Virginia Cavalry as a hospital steward in January 1864, and he eventually earned a promotion to captain. He apparently mustered out soon afterward.

Bushfield settled in West Virginia after the war, and he married Fredericka Strobel in Pleasants, West Virginia, on May 21, 1867. They had at least five children: Catherine, born around 1870; Jay, born around 1872; Ella, born around 1874; John, born around 1876; and Christian, born around 1878. They lived in Pleasants, and Bushfield worked as a physician. He died there on March 15, 1886.
