Charles K. Cobb to Francis J. Parker, 5 August 1862
Aug 5th 1862 – Evening
My dear Colonel
Austin goes tomorrow, his resignation having been accepted. He got the papers today. I shall get him to take this letter but with no hope that it will reach you before you have left Boston.
French has a leave but will be in the general hospital a day or two before he goes. It seems to me very important that Austin's place & Whiton's should be filled at once. Major Stephenson has seen Gen Morell & he directed him to say to you that the new companies should come at once & that they would learn more of by the example of the old men than they would in double the time at home. Corporal Damon died this evening.
At one o'clock A.M. today we had orders to be ready to march at a moments notice without baggage & with two days rations. I think however that it was only to support Hooker in case of trouble there. We distinctly heard this his cannon (cannon) this morning & last night.
It is said that this corps has been selected to storm Ft Darling. If you can get Draper's discharge & get another man in his place I am sure from what I have seen today that it would be for the interest of the service.
I am writing in haste & am very sleepy. Please excuse me
Affectionately Your friend
Chas K. Cobb.
Stephenson will resign if not promoted.
[endorsement]
