Zabdiel B. Adams Jr. to Francis J. Parker, 1 February 1863
Camp near Falmouth, Va.
Feby 1st 1863.
Col. Francis J Parker
My dear Col.
Adjutant Cobb has, I presume, kept you aware of all that has happened here since your departure. I assure you for my own little part I miss you extremely. A requirement is what the Col. is, and we all know pretty well what Capt. (I beg his pardon—Colonel) Prescott is. The want of dignified demeanor and language in the superior office is at / once remarked by the private, and a light value set on good order and discipline by the highest officer is sure to make it important to the lower grades of officers. The absence of anything like a strict firm hand upon the main ropes lets everything flap and the old ship soon falls into the trough of the sea and the cooks galley is found in the staterooms of or the lea-scuppers.
"A man in Co. H has cut his leg"—so I must close this nautical billet, by recommending the enclosure to your perusal.
Very truly yours
Z. B. Adams
