Thomas Herbert and Nancy G. Herbert to George C. Herbert, 11 February 1844
Lynn Feb 11th 1844

Dear Brother
Your epistle was recd last Sat and I was very glad to hear from you as I had been anxiously expecting a line for the last 4 weeks so I wrote you a week since and suppose you have got the letter before this time. yours come two or 3 days after I wrote. you will notice the reason why I wrote—the Dft was very acceptable the ballance you need not give yourself any uneasiness about it I will settle it. am very sorry you had so much trouble in getting what you did, but I have fixed the matter now, so that if you ever get the ball' why well and good if not we can arrange it between ourselves

You say you had not heard from home for a long time until you got my papers well the reason why I did not write is because I was waiting to hear from you? and E. A. says she wrote you some 4 weeks since and she should write again on recpt of my letter on rec'g urs so you will now get 3 letters very soon. We have not forgotten you I assure u for u are often mentioned and often thought of and the wish often uttered "how I should like to see George!" but so it is we shall not see each other for a long time. You say u think of taking a foreign passage instead of come direct home well if your health requires it I hope you will but I should prefer you would come Home as soon as you can for we want to see you very much well we anticipate a very pleasant time next summer when you come for we have lots of amusements here in the summer time Pick nics chowders [?] frys clam bakes and excursions in the woods and lots of other things too numerous to mention if the air would agree with you I'll warrant that you shall not want for anything else in the shape of fun for / moonlight nights we have dances on the beach and they are high I tell you but its no use of telling of them for I cant describe it nor begin to you must come and take part in them to know the pleasures of a dance by moonlight on Lynn Beach

We have had as bad weather here as you have had six of one and a ½ doz of the other for it has been cold enough to freeze the Devil for the last 4 weeks. we have just begun to thaw out. the Bay was frozen Six miles down the harbour one of the East B. ferry boats got stuck in the ice the other day. started from E B at 6 O'clk got over to B at 4 O'clk next morning they had to cut a channel to let the steamer out when they begun it froze as fast as they cut it but it is breaking up now fast.

Thank you Sis for your remarks on my Union I hope it will prove a wise act Mrs H. will answer for herself in not visiting. And none of your insinuations Sir there is time enough for that by & by.

Mr & Mrs S is well and the boy Walter is a fine fellow a remarkable youth they often speak of you. Mrs L[?] and grany is well George L is a candy merchant

My Dear Brother
for such I may now be permitted to call you. we were very happy to hear from you and had been expecting a letter for a long time I should have been very much gratified to had you present at our wedding and Laverne had a very pleasant time and all passed off very pleasantly but we should have enjoyed ourselves much better could our parents / and brothers and sisters have been with us. I have become quite accustomed to married life and feel very happy in my new station how I wish you could drop in and see us tonight at our happy home for such I assure it is, but I hope the time is not far distant when you will come and make us a long visit and then you can see for yourself whether the married life is a happy one or not.

I wish you were better contented at Mobile but I am not surprised that you are not. it must be very painfull to witness so much vice and degradation. I should think that every one that went from the North to the South would learn to prize their own happy New England, that Land of Gospel privileges and more especially those precious privileges we enjoy on the Sabbath

But believe me my Dear Brother it is well for us to meet with disappointments and trials here it teaches us not to place to high a veaue upon the things of this world and to seek for happiness in that only source from which true happiness is to be found an interest in the Saviour. chose Him for your Friend and portion and you will find that peace which the world knows not of. you will be prepared for what ever may await you here and fitted to spend a glorious and happy eternity above. that such may be your happy lot is the sincere prayer of your Sister. May God bless you and restore you  to us in health and safety. Good by

From your Affectionately Sister
Nancy G Herbert

George there is one thing I should like to know and as you have not said anything about it of yourself I shall take the liberty of a Brother and ask u that is if you are a mind to tell I want to know what salery you get and / how you stand in the world? If you do not wish to tell me say so and I wont think hard of it. I have had curiosity and interest enough to ask the question as you have had considerable care on your mind I want to know if you have been paid for it.

Think well old fella on the advice of your Sister I told her you would get on your knees and pray as soon as you read that however we get along
