Raleigh C. Thomas to Annie C. Thomas, 9 July 1862
Frederick July 9th

Dear Mother
Here we are in Frederick a bully old place. I called to see Mr Hanson & got breakfast, the first thing I had eaten since yesterday morning. I saw Mr. Byrd Ritchie & borrowed ten dollars from him please pay it. I am in hopes that this Maryland Campaign will be more prosperous than the last. Genl Early is a fighter & an able man. I saw Aunt & Uncle at Charlottesville about 2 weeks ago. they were well I also saw Aunt Jane Colston, Cousin Sue Minor. I am unlike Hanson in respect to seeing my relations I have called on every relation that I could & have rec'd a great deal of kindness from all.

Hugh Gatchell, S. Anderson, Sam Thomas came / up here to spend their 4th & while prowling through the Yankee camps & were snapped up by the Yanks & put in the Army & are in it now, a nice scrape to be in the Yankee Army & fighting against us? Gus Lemon & all the boys are well. Give my love to all the boys. My love to the family. I have no time to write or would write more. excuse the incoherent style of this letter I must plead great haste. much love for you my dearest mother from yours

affectly
Raleigh C. Thomas.

Good gracious how I long to see you all.
