Dear Mother,
I rec'd two or three letters from you by Flag of Truce one of 22nd ult. & 3rd inst it was a great disappointment not to see you when I was so close. Cousin S. & P were as kind as possible to me, so was Tully give him my love. Hanson is well & at Savannah courting Miss B[?] I think. Doug has gone to Cape May I suppose of course he will have a good time. how must I envy him. How do Julius Gatch & Sam feel at that affair. I am here now, my horse having been disabled & share a little furlough. I was extremely sorry to have missed Nannie but Steenie White saw her & told me about her. So the Dr was impressed to move stones. I can see John & Tom Morris, Otho [?] lifting stones. nice [?]

I am very well & hearty. About the colour of tarr but fat & hearty you can form no idea how I long to see you all again. it worries me day & night. I go home very often (in my dreams.) I suppose you knew that our Battalion had come some of your friends were captured at Moorefield. I hope however the authorities will soon resume the exchange. I was acting courier to one of the Generals or I would have "gone up" also. I think there are some strong chances of peace now. no one longs for it more than I do. how I would like to spend a week home now. Give my love to all the boys & ask Ned to write to me. Gus & I have never rec'd the likenesses or pipe. I suppose it is all right. Gus is well. Sanders  &c all well. Love to Grandma & the family & with much for yourself dear "Mum" I remain your affect son R. C. Thomas
