Raleigh C. Thomas to Annie C. Thomas, 17 September 1864
Charlottesville September 17th 1864

Dearest Mother.
Your letter of 29th Aug was rec'd yesterday with pleasure. Doug's & F's letters were rec'd & were answered about a week ago. I have been sick, a low fever, but am much better & will return to my command soon. I suppose Doug has returned from his summer jaunt. the idea of any one going away for the summer to us down here seems like a dream & in fact any pleasure we had before the War seems like some fairy romance. The British Subject had an elegant photograph of me I would like to know what he has done with it (?) Aunt Eliza is getting well fast, the child (Anne Campbell) is as pretty as children generally are. Did a button ever reach Dick from his brother. So Billy Poe is engaged to Miss R. luck attend him. as to a beard I could raise a pretty good one but am waiting for it to develop further when I will bring out my gottee & mustache. Give my love to Doug and all the boys. Gus is well I believe & all the boys. Poor Wm Key Howard he belonged to the 4th Va. Cav. I would like to be near my tree. I could manage to worry down a few. I wrote a letter to Marsh. love to all the family & much for you
